Introduction - What is Internet, Intranet & Extranet?
1) Internet
- It is a collection of local, regional and nation computer network that are linked together to exchange data and distribute processing task.
- Internet signifies interconnected networks, which is an information distribution system spanning all seven continents.
- Internet stands for international network. It is the largest computer network system in the world. It is a global network of computers. Millions of computer around the world can share any information at any time by using this worldwide network system. The internet is an ocean of information accessible to people across the world, but the way it can be used on various platform is different.
- In 1969, the department of defense DOD) of the United States of America started a project to allow researcher and military personnel to communication with each other in an emergency.
- The project is called ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Administration Network) and is the foundation of the internet.
2) Intranet
It refers to
using internet technologies such as a web server on an internal network. It is
a private network. A network based on TCP/IP protocols (an internet) belonging
to an organization, usually a corporation, accessible only by the organization.
An intranet’s web sites look and act just like any other Web sites, but the
firewall surrounding an intranet fends off unauthorized access. An internal computer
network that belongs to an organization and is accessible only by that
organization’s members.
3) Extranet
An extranet
is a computer network that allows controlled access from the outside for
specific business or educational purposes. An extranet is a type of private network that uses such Internet
technology and the public telecommunication system to securely share part of a
business's information and operations with suppliers, vendors, partners,
customers, or other businesses persons.
